VR Safety Induction for Marine Environments

We developed an immersive virtual reality experience to transform how safety inductions are delivered for personnel entering a ship. Instead of relying on traditional, time-consuming onsite briefings, users can complete a fully guided induction before they even arrive – using a VR headset to step inside a realistic, interactive environment.

The experience walks users through critical safety procedures, site-specific protocols and key areas of the vessel, simulating the real-world environment in a controlled and engaging way. From understanding access points and emergency exits to identifying hazards and required behaviours, every element is designed to prepare individuals with confidence before setting foot on site.

This approach not only improves knowledge retention through immersion but also significantly reduces onboarding time and operational disruption. By shifting inductions into a virtual space, businesses can streamline processes, reduce costs, and ensure a consistent, high-quality safety experience for every individual.

The VR experience is designed to be simple and intuitive, allowing users to naturally explore the environment as if they were physically there. Using a VR headset, users can look around in any direction – up, down and all around by simply moving their head, creating a fully immersive 360-degree view of the space.

Movement through the environment is guided through easy-to-use controls, such as gaze-based navigation or handheld controllers. By combining natural head movement with simple interaction mechanics, the experience feels accessible even for first-time users – making it an effective and user-friendly way to deliver complex safety information in an immersive format.

To further enhance the experience, we integrated spatial audio cues that guide users through the environment and draw attention to key areas. As users explore the space, sound prompts naturally direct their focus – encouraging them to look toward specific items of interest where important information is presented.

These audio cues are paired with custom animations that activate in real time, highlighting critical safety elements and procedures. Whether it’s a visual indicator appearing in a specific location or an animated sequence demonstrating a process, users are guided seamlessly without feeling overwhelmed.

This combination of sound and visual interaction ensures that nothing important is missed. It creates a more engaging and intuitive learning experience – helping users stay oriented, absorb information more effectively, and confidently understand the key areas they need to be aware of before entering the site.
